Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pledges to Continue Demining Assistance

PHNOM PENH: On January 18, the Cambodian Mine Authority signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs to extend cooperation on demining efforts during a handover ceremony of demining materials.

First Deputy Chairman of the Mine Authority Ly Thuch said that the MoU is an important step in Prime Minister Hun Manet’s goal to reduce the risk of landmines and explosive remnants of war in communities, save lives and improve the lives of local people.

He noted that China has made significant contributions to demining, providing $14.4 million US in grants in 2018. With that money, Cambodia was able to clear an area of more than 107 square kilometers, finding and destroying 77,954 landmines, while also providing mine awareness education to approximately 1.5 million people. He said that China’s grant gives hope to the National Strategic Plan for Mine Action 2018-2025.

Deputy Director of China’s Arms Management Department, Ma Shengkun, said that under the strong leadership of the Royal Government of Cambodia and the positive efforts of the Cambodian Mine Action Authority, the situation for people with disabilities due to landmine explosions has greatly improved.

He said that under the strong Cambodia-China friendship, China has provided support in the field of demining by organizing training courses, sending experts, and providing financial assistance and equipment. He noted that China would continue to assist in demining through the MoU signed on Thursday, as Cambodia’s goal of being mine-free by 2025 is in line with China’s Global Security Initiative.

The handover ceremony, which was also attended by Chinese Ambassador Wang Wentian, saw China donate 300 tents, demining equipment, 20 laptops and 20 tablets to assist in land clearance.
